The Mythology
In Hindu mythology. Rahu and Ketu are considered to be the two halves of the immortal asura or demon, Svarbhānu, who was beheaded by Lord Vishnu.
Lord Vishnu, known as the sustainer of the universe, shares a special connection with Neptune, the ruler of the seas. This tale stems from the story of the churning of the cosmic ocean, also known as “Samudra Manthan”, which played a vital role in the mythology.
In ancient times, a fierce battle took place between the Gods and their demonic foes, the Asuras. Facing imminent defeat, the gods sought Vishnu’s counsel. He revealed that the nectar “Amrita” from the milk-ocean would restore their vitality and grant them immortality. To churn the ocean, they needed to use a Himalayan mountain as a churner. Lacking the strength to lift it, they turned to Vishnu for guidance regarding forming an alliance with their enemies, the asuras, to achieve their goal.
Lord Vishnu took charge of the plan, leading to a temporary truce between the gods and the asuras. A colossal snake named “Vasuki”, a demonic serpent reigning over the Underworld, was captured and coiled around the mountain like a twisting rope.
As the ocean churned, a pot filled with the nectar of immortality finally emerged from the ocean. The gods and the demons eagerly rushed to secure their share of the Amrita, but Lord Vishnu, knowing that the demons would misuse the nectar, devised a plan to keep it away from them.
He assumed the form of Mohini, the enchantress, and started distributing the Amrita among the gods. Svarbhānu, unable to resist the temptation of eternal life, disguised himself as a god and made his way to the line of gods waiting to receive their share.
However, the luminaries – the Sun and the Moon, who were observing the entire event, recognised Svarbhānu’s demonic presence and alerted Mohini. In an instant, Vishnu, as Mohini, severed Svarbhānu’s head from his body using the divine weapon “Sudarshan Chakra”.
Despite being beheaded, Svarbhānu had already consumed a small amount of the Amrita, which rendered him immortal. As his head and body separated, they transformed into two powerful entities, Rahu and Ketu. Rahu is depicted as a snake-headed demon without a body, while Ketu is depicted as a headless torso.
With reverence for the celestial serpents newly anointed with immortality, Brahma, the creator deity, bestowed upon them a place along the celestial path.
Rahu and Ketu, now beings of divine essence, dwell alongside the celestial deities, mirroring the planets upon the grand ecliptic as the lunar nodes gracefully traverse the same celestial highway.

In order to exact revenge, Rahu relentlessly chases after them, endeavouring to engulf the Sun and Moon. However, as Rahu lacks a body, his throat is the exit point through which the Sun and Moon escape his clutches when he attempts to devour them.
